Older sex workers going hungry

Mamatere Strickland is worried about the growing number of underage
prostitutes working in south Auckland.

Underage prostitutes are forcing experienced sex workers to go home
hungry. These young girls are taking business away from women who
have been working the streets for years, says a Papatoetoe agency
established to help prostitutes over 18 who want to leave the sex
industry.

"Older women are going home with nothing. It’s been a sad Christmas for
many of them – the competition is just getting too much."

Te Aronga Hou Inaianei co-founder Mamatere Strickland says she has
had to ask the Salvation Army to get food parcels for older women who
haven’t "had any luck".

Dangerous dunny flushed away

The village toilet block in Arthurs Pass, New Zealand, will remain closed
until its demolition after residents barricaded the entrance before the
new year, fearing someone could be killed.

The December 28 move was taken due to the "absolutely absurd'' and
dangerous nature of the new road alignment created for turning traffic
into the visitor centre car park. The turning lane has a "ridiculous
proximity'' to the old toilet block entrance with no adequate footpath,
say locals.

Obese 'smelly' teen allowed back on bus

Teenager Eruera Simmonds is looking forward to returning to school and
getting back on the school bus.

The 14-year-old Kawerau boy, who has many health issues including
cerebral palsy, made headlines last year when Kawerau Coaches
designated him a "health hazard" and refused to allow him on the bus,
after complaints were made of him smelling bad.

'Little' Eruera is morbidly obese at 147 kilograms and was "devastated"
when the bus driver refused to take him to Kawerau College, despite
allowing his older sister Jessie on board.

A mediation meeting between the Simmonds family, Multiserve (the
Education Ministry's transport administrators), Kawerau College, Group
Special Education and the Human Rights Commission was held in
November.

'I don't blame my mate for shooting me'

Jason Green has told family and friends that a crocodile would have killed
him if his mate hadn't shot it. Zac Fitzgerald fired one shot from a pistol
-- hitting the huge saltie but also shattering his work colleague's right
elbow.

Jason's dad, John, 64, said of his son: "He's up and down -- some days
he's good, other days he's not so good.

"He'll be in hospital for a good while yet.'' Mr Green said. "I told him at
Christmas to watch out for those crocs.''
