“'Penis killer': I was consumed by a force”
Gabor Ziha is accused of murdering his ex-wife's lover and cutting off his penis has told a Sydney court he was overcome by a force he could not withstand. He has pleaded not guilty to murdering Barry Corbett, 58, on August 1, 2006, in a flat at Parramatta, in Sydney's west.
The NSW Supreme Court jury of 11 men and one woman has been told police found a human penis in the bedside drawer on top of a magazine.
He also has pleaded not guilty to a charge of maliciously wounding his estranged wife. Giving evidence before a NSW Supreme Court jury today, Mr Ziha said: "(It is) hard to describe that feeling, I was overcome by a power ... something you cannot stop."
'Darth Vader' lord mayor loses his jail appeal
Darwin's former lord mayor has lost an appeal against his prison sentence for using stolen council funds to buy a refrigerator, women's underwear and a Darth Vader voice distorter.
Peter Adamson now has 14 days to hand himself in to start serving a two-month prison sentence. Last July the former Country Liberal Party minister was found guilty of stealing and false accounting.
In the Northern Territory Supreme Court in Darwin today Chief Justice Brian Martin dismissed Adamson's appeal against his sentence and conviction. Outside the court, Adamson said he was "obviously very disappointed" with the decision.
Dad who roped son into burglary a 'versatile villain'
Steven Peter Urlich could do nothing but hang his head in shame yesterday when it was revealed he took his 11-year-old son with him on a pre-Christmas burglary. Short on money, the 54-year-old unemployed New Plymouth man waited for dusk on December 11 before taking his son to the Mitsi Bits Auto Parts store.
Once there, Urlich broke in, stealing a number of tyres which his young son helped hide a short distance from the store. The police caught him, however, coming back for the stolen goods.
Despite staying out of trouble for the best part of six years, Urlich was described by the judge as a "pretty versatile villain".
Florist refusing to sell Valentine's Day roses
A Wellington florist is taking a stand against red roses on Valentine's Day, saying the prices are a rip off. Next Stop Earth owner Jeanie McCafferty has told her Newtown customers she does not agree with the commercialisation of the day. She told NZPA red roses cost about six times more to buy on Valentine's Day than any other time of the year.
"I just don't think it's value for money basically."
She also refused to deliver flowers to workplaces as it put pressure on her staff and couriers. She advised people to buy flowers for loved ones "next month as a surprise" or just do something little such as writing out a poem.
